Who Can Join?
All adult descendants over 18 years of age in direct line, male or mixed, and only they (no collateral relatives), of “all those who served the cause of American independence or demonstrated effective sympathy toward it” may apply.
Eligible descendants include those of members of the French military forces engaged in combat against the British, anywhere in the world, during the military alliance between the United States and France, from February 6, 1778 to September 3, 1783; but also those who effectively contributed to the struggle from April 1775 onward. There is no rank requirement for the ancestor.
Additionally, some honorary members, men or women (statutorily less than 10% of total members), are co-opted by the board of directors.
Admission of the candidate, presented by two sponsors, is decided by the board of directors upon recommendation of the Proof Commission.
